Bagan - The land of the temples

Bagan, a mysterious and magical place is recognized as one the world's most impressive cultural heritage sites, along with Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Machu Pichu in Peru. From the 9th to the 13th centuries, the city was also called Pagan - the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan - the first unified kingdom, which would later become the modern state of Myanmar.
Contrary to the crowded Yangon, rich in betel leaves Bagan appears fresh and truly peaceful.
Bagan is truly magnificent. The landscape, with literally thousands of temples, is particularly brilliant in the light of dawn and the red of dusk. From the top of the Shwesandaw tower one may look down on majestic scenery, immense pagodas and distant hills providing an unforgettable vista.
It is easy to imagine the admiration of those who once was set foot in Bagan during its heyday for the places that that King Annawrahta had built. While life in the outside world is bustling and vibrant, the ancient capital of Bagan is still there, calm and serene as if it had been asleep in the past for centuries.
